Neoprene — chloroprene rubber, CR — is the generalist of the elastomer world. It resists weather better than SBR, oil better than EPDM, and it is inherently flame retardant, which few rubbers are. That combination keeps it in wetsuits, cable jackets, industrial seals and fire-rated gaskets. It is rarely the best answer to any single requirement, but it is often the only material that covers several at once.

Key properties

プロパティ Typical value
Hardness range 40 – 90 Shore A
Service temperature -40 to +120 °C
Tensile strength 7 – 15 MPa
Elongation at break 200 – 500 %
Compression set (22 h / 70 °C) 20 – 30 %
Flammability Self-extinguishing

Values are typical for unfilled moulding grades at 23 °C unless stated. Glass-filled and specialty grades differ.

Typical applications

  • Wetsuits and diving equipment
  • Cable jackets and hose covers
  • Fire-rated gaskets and seals
  • Industrial diaphragms and bellows
  • Adhesives and protective coatings

Processing notes

  • Neoprene sits between NBR and EPDM on both oil and weather resistance. If one of those dominates, specify that polymer instead — it will be cheaper and better.
  • Flame retardancy is inherent but grade-dependent. For a specific fire rating, send the standard and we will confirm the compound.
  • Crystallises at low temperature and stiffens below -30 °C. Not suitable for deep cold.
  • Compression set is only moderate. For static sealing in hot oil, FKM or HNBR are better choices.
Tooling, not just material. Every material above behaves differently in the tool — shrinkage, gate position, cooling and ejection all change. We review the DFM against the specific grade before the tool is cut, so the first shot is a sample, not a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

Why choose neoprene over EPDM?

When you need some oil resistance alongside weather resistance, or when flame retardancy matters. EPDM beats it on weather and heat but swells in oil.

Is neoprene still available given chloroprene regulations?

Yes, production continues and the material remains widely used. Some markets have tighter handling rules for the monomer; that affects manufacturing compliance, not your part specification.
