HNBR is NBR with the double bonds removed by hydrogenation. The oil resistance stays, but heat resistance climbs from 120 °C to 150 °C, ozone attack effectively disappears, and mechanical strength improves — which is why timing belts, air-conditioning seals and oilfield packers moved to HNBR. It costs roughly two to three times NBR, so it is specified where the extra temperature margin is worth paying for.

Key properties

プロパティ Typical value
Hardness range 50 – 90 Shore A
Service temperature -40 to +150 °C (+160 °C short term)
Tensile strength 15 – 25 MPa
Elongation at break 200 – 450 %
Compression set (22 h / 150 °C) 15 – 25 %
Ozone resistance Excellent — no surface cracking

Values are typical for unfilled moulding grades at 23 °C unless stated. Glass-filled and specialty grades differ.

Typical applications

  • Automotive timing and drive belts
  • Air-conditioning system seals
  • Oilfield packers and downhole seals
  • High-temperature hydraulic seals
  • Industrial hose for hot oil service

Processing notes

  • HNBR is stiffer than NBR at the same hardness. Where a soft, conformable seal is needed, specify the hardness carefully and expect a longer cycle.
  • Peroxide curing is normal for HNBR and gives the best set resistance. Sulphur-cured grades exist but are a niche.
  • Still not suitable for ketones, esters or strong acids — hydrogenation improves ageing, not the fundamental polarity of the polymer.
  • Price is the main barrier. If service temperature stays under 110 °C, standard NBR is the rational choice.
Tooling, not just material. Every material above behaves differently in the tool — shrinkage, gate position, cooling and ejection all change. We review the DFM against the specific grade before the tool is cut, so the first shot is a sample, not a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

When is HNBR worth the extra cost over NBR?

When service temperature exceeds about 110 °C, when ozone or weathering is present, or when the part must survive years of flexing in hot oil — timing belts are the classic case.

Can HNBR replace FKM?

Only below about 150 °C. Above that FKM wins on temperature and chemical resistance. HNBR wins on low-temperature flexibility and on cost below 150 °C.
