SBR is the highest-volume synthetic rubber in the world, and for good reason: it is cheap, abrasion resistant and bonds well to fabric and metal. It is not a high-performance material — it has poor oil resistance, moderate weather resistance and a service ceiling around 100 °C — but for mats, footwear, conveyor components and general mechanical goods, nothing beats it on cost per part.

Typical values for standard moulding grades. Exact figures depend on the specific compound or grade — confirm against your drawing before quoting.
Key properties
| 속성 | Typical value |
|---|---|
| Hardness range | 40 – 90 Shore A |
| Service temperature | -50 to +100 °C |
| Tensile strength | 7 – 20 MPa |
| Elongation at break | 300 – 600 % |
| Compression set (22 h / 70 °C) | 20 – 35 % |
| Abrasion resistance | Very good |
Values are typical for unfilled moulding grades at 23 °C unless stated. Glass-filled and specialty grades differ.
Typical applications
- Anti-vibration mounts and pads
- Industrial mats and flooring
- Footwear soles and heels
- Conveyor belt covers
- General mechanical and automotive goods
Processing notes
- SBR has essentially no oil resistance and only moderate ozone resistance. Outdoor and oil-exposed applications need EPDM or NBR instead.
- Often blended with natural rubber to improve tear strength and building tack — specify whether a blend is acceptable.
- Compression set is worse than NBR or EPDM. For static sealing, do not use SBR.
- Cheap compound is the main risk. Specify tensile and elongation minimums, not just hardness, or you will receive a heavily filled part.
Frequently asked questions
Is SBR suitable for outdoor use?
Marginal. It resists weather better than natural rubber but worse than EPDM. For long outdoor life we recommend EPDM; for short-life outdoor goods SBR is acceptable and much cheaper.
Can SBR be bonded to metal?
Yes, with standard rubber-to-metal bonding agents during vulcanisation. This is common for anti-vibration mounts.
