POM (Acetal) Injection Molding: Thermal Stability and Tooling

Ev / Blog

White and black POM acetal injection moulded gears, bushings and clips arranged on a workshop bench
POM gears, bushings and clips. Every one of these is a part where dimensional stability, low friction and machinability matter more than strength — which is the case where acetal beats nylon.

What POM is for

Polyoxymethylene — acetal, POM — is a highly crystalline engineering plastic with an unusual combination: high stiffness, low friction, excellent fatigue resistance, very good machinability, and dimensional stability that nylon cannot match because POM absorbs almost no water.

That last property is why POM wins so many precision parts. A POM gear holds its dimensions from the day it is moulded to the day it is scrapped, in any humidity. A nylon gear does not. For anything that must fit, run quietly and stay in tolerance for years, POM is usually the right answer.

The two numbers that govern POM processing: erime sıcaklığı 190 – 210 °C and residence time under 6 minutes. POM is thermally unstable outside a narrow band — too cold and it does not melt, too hot or too long and it unzips into formaldehyde, which is both a health hazard and a self-accelerating decomposition. There is no forgiving zone.

Grades

Grade Key property Used for
Homopolymer (POM-H) Higher stiffness, strength and creep resistance Gears, precision parts, load-bearing
Copolymer (POM-C) Better thermal and chemical stability, easier processing General parts, hot-water contact, food
Impact modified Notched Izod 80 – 120 J/m Clips, latches, snap fits
Glass filled, 20 – 30 % Modulus 6 – 9 GPa, low creep Structural brackets
Low friction / PTFE filled µ down to 0.08 Bearings, sliding parts
Anti-static / conductive Surface resistivity 10³ – 10⁶ Ω Electronics handling, fuel systems
UV stabilised Carbon black or HALS Outdoor parts
Food contact / medical Compliant grades Food equipment, drug delivery

Table 1 — POM grade families. The homopolymer / copolymer choice is the first decision.

The homopolymer versus copolymer distinction matters more than it does for most materials. POM-H is about 10 – 15 % stiffer and stronger, and has better creep resistance. POM-C is more resistant to thermal degradation, more resistant to hot water and weak acids, and has a wider processing window. For a part that will be moulded in a difficult tool or run on an old machine, POM-C is the safer choice.

Table 2 — POM properties. The equilibrium water absorption of 0.5 – 0.8 % is 3 – 4× lower than nylon.

That last row is the commercial argument for POM over nylon in precision parts. Nylon grows 0.3 – 0.6 % in service; POM grows 0.1 – 0.2 %. On a 50 mm part that is the difference between 0.25 mm of movement and 0.06 mm — the difference between a tolerance that holds and one that does not.

Thermal stability: the failure mode that matters

POM decomposes by unzipping — the polymer chain depolymerises from the end, releasing formaldehyde, and the formaldehyde catalyses further decomposition. Once it starts, it accelerates. A barrel left hot with POM in it over a weekend can be destroyed, and the gas is flammable and toxic.

Condition Result Prevention
Melt above 230 °C Rapid decomposition, formaldehyde smell Hard limit at 220 °C; 210 °C preferred
Residence time above 10 min Yellowing, then bubbling, then decomposition Size the shot to 60 – 80 % of barrel capacity
Machine stopped hot Decomposition within 20 – 30 min Purge with PE or PP before stopping; or cool the barrel
Contamination with PVC or flame retardant Acid or halogen catalyses decomposition Dedicated barrel, or a thorough purge
Hot-runner dead spot Slow decomposition over days No dead spots; smooth, streamlined flow paths
Regrind with degraded material Seeds decomposition in the next shot Discard yellowed or bubbled parts; do not regrind them

Table 3 — POM stability failures. Every one of these is avoidable with discipline.

The practical rules that come out of this table:

  • Size the machine to the tool. A shot that uses less than 40 % of the barrel capacity leaves material in the barrel for too long. This is the most common cause of POM problems in job shops.
  • Purge before every stop. Natural PE or PP is the standard purge; there are also commercial POM purge compounds.
  • Never let the barrel sit hot and idle for more than 15 minutes. If a run pauses, either keep cycling or purge and shut down.
  • Ventilate. Formaldehyde is a respiratory irritant and a suspected carcinogen. Extraction at the nozzle and at the mould is normal practice.

Myth: "POM is easy — it just runs." POM runs beautifully inside its window and destroys itself outside it. The shops that run POM well are the ones with a written rule about shot size and a purge discipline, not the ones with the newest machine.

Processing window

Parametre Typical setting Notlar
Erime sıcaklığı 190 – 210 °C Never above 220 °C
Barrel profile 170 / 185 / 195 / 200 °C Flat profile; avoid hot spots
Nozzle 195 – 205 °C Use a large, free-flow nozzle
Mould temperature 80 – 110 °C Hot mould = high crystallinity = strength and wear
Injection pressure 70 – 120 MPa High, because POM is stiff when molten
Injection speed Moderate to fast Fast fill avoids the cold-slug problem
Hold pressure 60 – 80 % of injection POM needs firm packing; shrinkage is high
Back pressure 0.5 – 1.0 MPa
Vida hızı 50 – 90 rpm
Drying 2 h at 80 – 90 °C if stored humid Not normally needed; bags are fine
Regrind Up to 20 % Same grade only; never degraded material

Table 4 — POM processing. The 220 °C ceiling is not a suggestion.

Mould temperature is the quality lever. At 60 °C a POM part has a thin crystalline skin over a less crystalline core, and it will wear faster and creep more. At 100 °C the part is uniformly crystalline, dimensionally stable and has the wear resistance the datasheet promises. The cycle is longer — 25 – 35 % longer than a cold mould — but for a gear or a bearing, it is the difference between a part that lasts and one that does not.

Design rules

Özellik Rule Why POM is different
Wall thickness 1.0 – 3.0 mm; uniform within 20 % High shrinkage makes thick sections sink and void
Draft 0.5 – 1° POM is slippery and releases well
Internal radius ≥ 0.5 × wall Notch sensitive under impact
Ribs 0.5 × wall, spacing ≥ 2 × wall Thick ribs sink visibly
Bosses Wall 0.6 × nominal
Snap fits Strain ≤ 2 % for repeated use, 4 % single assembly POM is springy but fatigues
Living hinge Possible in POM-C, but PP is better POM hinges work but have shorter life
Gate Large; direct or edge gate preferred POM is shear sensitive
Shrinkage allowance 2.0 % nominal, confirm by trial Higher than most; the tool must be cut for it

Table 5 — POM design rules. The 2 % shrinkage is the number toolmakers must not guess at.

Tooling: steel, gates and hot runners

Item Tavsiye Reason
Mould steel Hardened stainless (420 or equivalent, 48 – 52 HRC) Formaldehyde attacks plain steel; corrosion causes sticking and marks
Core and cavity finish SPI B-1 or better POM grips a rough surface
Gates Large, with a short land Reduces shear heating
Hot runner Only with streamlined, dead-spot-free tips A dead spot decomposes slowly and ruins every shot
Hot-runner temperature 190 – 200 °C, tightly controlled ±2 °C control is required
Ejection Generous ejector area POM is stiff; thin ejectors mark the part
Venting 0.02 – 0.03 mm depth, generous Trapped gas burns and the gas is corrosive
Soğutma Uniform, both halves Asymmetric cooling warps a high-shrinkage material badly

Table 6 — POM tooling. Stainless steel is not a luxury — it is a maintenance requirement.

POM as a machined material

POM is one of the best engineering plastics to machine: it produces a continuous chip, holds tolerance, takes a fine finish, and does not need coolant for most operations. That makes it the standard choice for prototypes and low-volume precision parts before a tool exists.

Operation Notlar
Dönüş Sharp, high-rake tools; positive rake; avoid rubbing
Frezeleme Climb milling preferred; sharp cutters; air blast rather than flood coolant
Sondaj Slow helix, sharp point; clear chips frequently — POM grabs a drill
Tapping Oversize the tap 0.05 mm; POM springs back
Annealing before machining 2 h at 140 – 150 °C for extruded stock, to relieve stress
Coolant Water-soluble is fine; avoid neat oils that swell the surface

Table 7 — Machining POM. The tap oversize note saves a lot of broken taps.

Defects and causes

Kusur Neden Fix
Yellow or brown parts Over-heating or long residence Lower melt; reduce shot-to-barrel ratio; purge
Bubbles / voids Decomposition gas, or shrinkage voids Check residence time; increase hold pressure
Formaldehyde smell Decomposition starting Purge immediately; find the hot spot
Black specks Carbonised material in the barrel or hot runner Full purge with PE; strip and clean the hot runner
Sink marks Thick sections, low hold pressure Uniform walls; increase hold
Çarpıklık Asymmetric cooling, high shrinkage Balance mould temperature; uniform walls
Poor weld line strength Low mould temperature Raise mould to 90 – 100 °C
Sticking / drag marks Over-packing, rough tool, insufficient draft Reduce hold; polish the tool; add draft

Table 8 — POM defects. Any smell of formaldehyde means stop and purge.

Where POM wins over nylon

Uygulama Why POM Why not nylon
Precision gears Holds tolerance in humidity Nylon grows 0.3 – 0.6 %
Bushes and bearings Low friction, low wear, stable Nylon swells and loses clearance
Fuel system components Resistant to petrol and diesel Nylon is also good but absorbs alcohol
Clips and latches Springy, fatigue resistant Nylon is tougher but creeps
Plumbing components Resistant to hot water (copolymer) Nylon hydrolyses in hot water
Food equipment parts Approved grades, machinable, no odour Nylon can impart taste

Table 9 — POM versus nylon. The hot-water row is decisive: nylon degrades in continuous hot water, POM-C does not.

Mould temperature and the cycle-time trade

POM is the clearest case in injection moulding where a longer cycle buys a better part. The mould temperature controls crystallinity, and crystallinity controls wear resistance, creep and dimensional stability.

Mould temperature Crystallinity Cycle time index Wear resistance Verdict
50 °C 55 – 60 % 100 Zayıf Cosmetic parts only
70 °C 65 – 70 % 115 Adil General parts
90 °C 72 – 78 % 132 İyi Gears, bearings
110 °C 78 – 82 % 150 Best Precision wear parts

Table 9 — Mould temperature versus crystallinity for POM. A 50 % cycle increase buys roughly double the wear life.

Whether that trade is worth it depends entirely on the part. For a cosmetic clip, a cold mould is correct — the part is not loaded and the cycle matters. For a gear running at 3,000 rpm in a power tool, a 90 – 100 °C mould is the difference between a gearbox that lasts five years and one that whines and fails in eighteen months. Both parts might come off the same machine on the same day, and they need different moulds.

What tolerance POM can actually hold

Dimension type Achievable tolerance Notlar
Overall dimension, < 30 mm ±0.05 mm With a stable process and a corrected tool
Overall dimension, 30 – 80 mm ±0.08 mm
Overall dimension, > 80 mm ±0.15 mm Shrinkage variation dominates
Wall thickness ±0.08 mm Worse than overall dimension
Hole diameter, moulded pin ±0.05 mm POM holds holes well
Centre distance, two features ±0.05 mm Set by the tool, not the process
Gear tooth profile DIN 9 – 10 AGMA 8 – 9 equivalent
Flatness on a 50 mm face 0.1 – 0.2 mm Depends on gate position
Straightness on a long part 2 – 4 mm/m Cooling asymmetry dominates

Table 10 — Realistic POM tolerances. These are production figures, not best-case.

The reason POM holds tolerance better than most semi-crystalline materials is that it does not absorb water — the dimension you measure a day after moulding is the dimension it will have next year. That stability is worth more than the absolute tolerance figure, because it means a part that passes at incoming inspection still passes at assembly, six months later, in a humid warehouse.

POM versus other wear materials

Mülkiyet POM PA66 PBT PPS
Coefficient of friction 0.15 – 0.25 0.20 – 0.35 0.35 – 0.45 0.30 – 0.40
Wear rate (unlubricated) Düşük Low–moderate Orta düzeyde Düşük
Dimensional stability in humidity Mükemmel Zayıf Mükemmel Mükemmel
Impact strength Orta düzeyde Yüksek Düşük Düşük
Continuous temperature 90 – 105 °C 100 – 120 °C 120 – 140 °C 200 – 220 °C
Machinability Mükemmel Adil Adil Zayıf
Relative cost 1× 1.1× 1.3× 4 – 6×

Table 11 — Wear material comparison. POM wins on friction plus stability plus machinability, which is a combination nothing else matches.

The temperature column is where POM loses. Above 100 °C continuous, POM softens and creeps, and a gearbox running at 110 °C will fail even though the material was correct at room temperature. That is the point at which PBT or PPS becomes necessary — and the point at which the part stops being machinable and the tooling cost goes up.

Frequently asked questions

What is the maximum melt temperature for POM?

220 °C as an absolute ceiling, 210 °C in normal running, 200 °C for copolymers with a long residence time. Above 230 °C decomposition is rapid and self-accelerating.

Why does my POM part smell of formaldehyde?

Because it is decomposing. Either the melt is too hot, the residence time is too long, or there is a dead spot in the hot runner or nozzle. Purge with natural PE immediately, then find the cause. Do not keep running and hope it clears.

Can POM be run in the same barrel as PVC?

No. Residues of PVC release hydrogen chloride, which catalyses POM decomposition violently. POM needs a dedicated barrel or a very thorough purge with PE followed by purging compound.

Why does POM need a hot mould?

Because it is highly crystalline and the crystallinity — and therefore the strength, wear resistance and dimensional stability — depends on how slowly it cools. At 60 °C the part is under-crystallised; at 100 °C it is fully crystalline. The longer cycle is the price of the properties you specified the material for.

Does POM need drying?

Usually not if it comes in sealed bags. POM absorbs only 0.2 % in 24 hours and that level does not cause defects. If bags have been open in a humid plant for weeks, dry at 80 – 90 °C for 2 hours.

POM-H or POM-C?

POM-H for maximum stiffness, strength and creep resistance — gears, precision parts. POM-C for thermal and chemical stability, hot water, food contact, and any job where the machine or tool might run hot. POM-C is the safer default.

Can POM be painted or bonded?

Poorly. POM has very low surface energy and almost nothing sticks without a specific pre-treatment. Plasma treatment works; flame treatment is marginal; most adhesives fail. Design for mechanical assembly or ultrasonic welding instead.

What causes black specks in POM parts?

Carbonised material — usually in a hot-runner dead spot or behind the screw check ring. POM is unforgiving here because the decomposition products are dark and corrosive. Strip and clean, then check the hot-runner tips for a step or a cavity where material can sit.

Moulding a POM gear or bearing and need the tolerance to hold?

Send the drawing and the service conditions. We will tell you the right homopolymer or copolymer, the mould temperature the part needs, and whether the tool should be cut for 2 % or 2.5 % shrinkage.
