TPE and TPU are what give a rigid part a soft edge. They mould like a thermoplastic, bond to PP, ABS, PC and PA without adhesive, and cover the hardness range from a gel-soft 30 Shore A to a semi-rigid 70 Shore D. TPU brings abrasion resistance and load bearing; TPE brings a drier, more rubber-like feel and easier processing. Choosing between them is usually a question of feel versus wear.

Key properties

Eigendom Typical value
Dichtheid 1.00 – 1.25 g/cm³
Hardness range 30 Shore A – 70 Shore D
Tensile strength 10 – 40 MPa
Elongation at break 300 – 700 %
Mould shrinkage 0.5 – 2.0 %
Service temperature -40 to +120 °C

Values are typical for unfilled moulding grades at 23 °C unless stated. Glass-filled and specialty grades differ.

Typical applications

  • Soft-touch handles and grip surfaces
  • Overmoulded seals and gaskets
  • Wearable bands and watch straps
  • Cable jackets and strain reliefs
  • Automotive interior soft trim

Processing notes

  • Dry TPU 2 h at 80 – 100 °C. TPU is hygroscopic and moisture causes surface defects and strength loss.
  • Melt 180 – 230 °C, mould 20 – 50 °C. TPE tolerates a wider window than TPU and is the safer choice for thick sections.
  • For overmoulding, the substrate must be clean, dry and ideally preheated. Mechanical interlocks still matter — adhesion alone is not a warranty.
  • Shore A grades below 50 are difficult to demould and prone to tearing at the gate. Design generous draft and a submarine or valve gate.
Tooling, not just material. Every material above behaves differently in the tool — shrinkage, gate position, cooling and ejection all change. We review the DFM against the specific grade before the tool is cut, so the first shot is a sample, not a surprise.

Frequently asked questions

TPE or TPU for a grip that gets handled daily?

TPU if abrasion and oils are present — tool grips, industrial handles. TPE if the priority is a dry, rubbery feel and colour stability. Both can be colour matched.

Can you overmould onto an existing part?

Yes, both insert overmoulding and two-shot moulding. Two-shot gives the better bond and lower cycle cost at volume; insert moulding is cheaper to tool for low quantities. We quote both and let the volume decide.
